Its been almost a decade since we celebrated Vijay Divas.... but do we still remember the brave men who made it possible???


Name : Captian Vikram Batra
Code Name : Sher Shah (Lion of Hind)

Place: Railway Station.
Situation: A 24 year man is leaving for war.

A girl crying for a promise " agali baar jab aaoge, mujhse shaadi karke jaana"
The soldier smiles.... touches his parents feet .... and says wait for me....
But she didn't knew that her wait was forever.........

Place: Neugal Café.
Situation : A coffee with friends.

Friend:"The war has begun, who knows when you will be asked to go, you better be careful."
Sher Shah: "Don't worry, 'I'll either come back after raising the Indian flag in victory or return wrapped in it.'

Place: Himalayan mountains.
Situation: War Time.

A soldier tries to see the situation through binoculars... next moment shot dead with the bullet in the center of his forehead.
Leaving every other soldier trembling. The commanding officer decides this is not the way... there must be some other way.. Orders regroup....

Place: Camp.
Situation: Meeting held for deciding strategy.

Officer 1:"Are u sure?"
Officer 2:"Yes Sir, I am. There's no other way to capture peak 5140. We don't have a choice. It's the only way"
Thus it was decided that Sher Shah with only 5 soldiers will undertake one of Indian Army's greatest mission perhaps the most difficult and I will not say impossible because they achieved it.
Yes the peak 5140 was 17000 feet high. Sher Shah and Captain Sanjeev Jamval commanded one of the impossible mountain climbing expedition, but not in the bright daylight, they did it during the dark night. On the night of June 19, 1999 they made it. Remember "Lakshya" and imagine rock climbing scene during the night. (I guess even director thought it's too super human thing to show)

The only thing these sons of our great soil knew was that enemies were controlling the NH1 and disrupting the food and ammunition transport to the Indian troops. They had to capture to make sure our land was safe.

The men climbed the mountain in the pitch dark. Sher Shah led the way. A young Boy at heart and a beast at war craft took three of the enemies in a close combat. India took control of peak 5140. There were three bunkers with light n heavy machine guns. Till date no where in the world such a mission has been accomplished, but Sher Shah did it with words which later become every Kargil hero's Slogan after capturing peak " Yeh Dil Maange More!!!"

Place: Base Camp.
Situation: Call to His Sister.

Sher Shah: " Didi bahut boora lag raha hai".
Sister : "kya hua?"
Sher Shah :"Didi, it was meant for me and I lost my man"
Yes he was referring to a bullet which killed his fellow soldier and he was upset because under his command a man lost his life. For a young 24 year old maturity of this level is undefined.

Place : Base Camp.
Situation : TV Interview.

Barka Dutt: "Vikram you are going for another crucial operation, what are your thoughts at this moment?"
Sher Shah: "I wish the families of the deceased soldiers are looked after well by the government and society", Vikram replied and turned his face from the camera.

Hundreds of miles away, sitting at home, watching the interview, G L Batra knew what was going on his son's mind. He knew his 24 yrs son whose life has just begun would never return home.He turned silent.

Place : Same mountains
Situation : War Time

"Yeh Dil Maange More" was the last words he said to TV reporter Dutt . Now he wanted more. Not in a great condition after an injury, Sher Shah volunteered to capture peak 4875... a 16000 feet wall!!

He and another young officer Anuj Nair took the responsibilty .They belonged to the Delta company and captured peak 4750 a few days earlier.Now his heart wanted more....

His company again climbed the wall in the night . This time the enemies knew that Sher Shah was coming their way. They made every attempt to stop him, but Sher Shah was UNSTOPPABLE. Again in close combat he brought three more down. With Anuj Nair on his side he had captured peak 4875. They were in a bunker when still enemies were firing at them. But inside bunker they were safe and easily targeting the enemies. But Sher Shah saw one of his junior officer injured just outside the bunker.
One of the subedar volunteered to go for his rescue but what Sher Shah said to him is really unbelievable
"Oye Rook Ja ... Mujhe Jaane de ... Tu Baal Bacchedar wala aadmi hai .. Hat Ja peeche"

He jumped out of the bunker and as he was heading towards his injured mate , a bullet hit his chest ,he fell down in anguish and screamed " Jai Mata Di" ... those were his last words.
Our Great Hero died,but it inspired others to win the war. Everybody there at peak 4875 knew nothing but to win and save the efforts of Sher Shah. Anuj charged out with great braveness and captured bunker No 4 but he was shot soon after that. On July 9 1999 morning Indian Flag was up n fluttering on peak 4875 and at the same time a body was getting wrapped in Indian Tri- color.

Later peak 4875 is named as Captian Vikram Batra point. Indian Govt Awarded Sher Shah with Param Vir Chakra. But the question is how many of us are aware of such great heros. We only speak of Gandhi and Nehru who has brought us Independence but not about the sacrifice made in order to keep India Safe,by soilders like Vikram Batra. Why our text books wont include such lives, even they deserve a place in Indian History.
