After having one of those bad days at office, I was missing my home big time when I returned. Tried to catch up with some friends but found them too busy for me. The Loneliness was killing me. A call with my sister and cracking some jokes didn’t help either. Facebook, orkut, gtalk was nothing seemed to be worth. Then I met Hachiko, well I must say the legend of Hachiko. He changed end of the day into a blissful one.
I am deviating big time from writing love stories to something else. Something which needs to be told. It’s just so extraordinary to be true story. A story which wetted my eyes. A story of extraordinary relationship of love. This is the story is of Hachiko (pronounced as Hachi).
In Japan friendship, love, loyalty and companionship have a common synonym- it’s Hachiko. Hachiko was born in Odate on Nov 10 1923. He met his soul mate Prof. Hidesubaro Ueno at the Shibuya Railway Station as a cute little Akito puppy. Every morning Hachiko and his master had a routine. Hachiko used to walk his master till this station and in the evening walk him back from station to home. He promptly used to come at 5 in evening without missing a single day to greet his master. One fine day in May 1925 Hachiko started behaving weirdly with his master. He was trying to stop him from going to college. Many say the animals can sense forthcoming danger. And Hachiko had sensed it. That day despite of Hachiko’s behavior Professor went to college. But he never returned. He got a stroke at the university which took his breath. Hachiko waited for him that day, the next day and the wait went on.
After professor’s death Hachikō was given away but he escaped and showed up at the station the same evening to wait for his master. He went back to professor’s house that night. Next evening he was again station at 5. This continued for several days. One fine day Hachiko realized his master no more stays in the house. He left the house and started living in the station itself. Every day his eyes were fixed on the commuters coming out of the terminal and each day he was disappointed. Hachiko became familiar with the routine commuters. They started bringing treats and food to nourish him. The wait continued till his last minute for more than 10 years.
Hachiko waited regardless Rain, Hot Sun, Snow, Cold winds …… whatever it may be until his last heartbeat on March 8 1935 at the same place where he found his master. Some people say he died after spiritual reunion with his master. But I have no doubt it happened.
Professor’s students visited the dog frequently and published articles about Hachiko in newspapers. By the end of 1932 Hachiko had become national sensation. Japanese started to breed endangered Akito dogs again. Hachiko was Japan’s national symbol of loyalty. Till today teachers and parents tell Hachiko’s story, when they teach Love and loyalty to the children. He is still remembered everyday in Japan. In 1934 a Bronze statue was erected at the same spot where Hachiko used to wait. His stuffed remains are kept at the national museum of Japan in Tokyo. The exit from where Prof Ueno used to come out is named after Hachiko. Total 3 movies are made on this story latest being Richard Gere starrer. Thanks a lot to Gere and Lasse Hallström for telling such a beautiful story.
